Island Peak

Highlights

  • Breathtaking views of surrounding mountains like Lhotse, Lhotse Shar and Everest itself through the spectacular Khumbu region.
  • Technically demanding glacier travel crossing Imja and Lhotse glaciers using ropes, ladders and climbing gear.
  • High-altitude climbing experience requiring acclimatization and basic mountaineering skills like roped climbing, ice axe usage and crevasse rescue.

Overview

Island Peak (6,165 meters / 20,226 feet), also known as Imja Tse, is one of Nepal’s most popular trekking peaks, located in the heart of the Khumbu region near Mount Everest. Perfect for aspiring mountaineers, the Island Peak expedition offers a combination of technical climbing and high-altitude trekking through the legendary Everest Base Camp trail.

The journey begins with a scenic trek through the Khumbu Valley, passing vibrant Sherpa villages like Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche. Along the way, trekkers enjoy awe-inspiring views of Himalayan giants including Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam.

As climbers approach Island Peak Base Camp, they navigate the Imja and Lhotse glaciers using fixed ropes and ladders. Acclimatization days are built in to prepare for the altitude and the physically demanding summit push. The final ascent involves roped glacier travel, traversing crevasse ladders, and following a snowy and rocky ridgeline to the summit.

Though considered a non-technical peak compared to Nepal’s 8000ers, Island Peak requires proper mountaineering gear and skills such as using crampons, an ice axe, and rope systems. With its panoramic summit views of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Baruntse, Island Peak offers one of the most rewarding introductions to Himalayan climbing.

Ideal for adventurous trekkers and novice climbers, this expedition blends cultural immersion, physical challenge, and dramatic mountain scenery into one unforgettable high-altitude experience.
