Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek

Highlights

  • The Kanchenjunga trek demands unwavering endurance as trekkers traverse rugged, off-beat trails through pristine wilderness, immersing themselves in the region's untamed beauty.
  • The region boasts a diverse array of wildlife, including bird species, snakes, lizards, amphibians, fish, and insect species.
  • The vegetation ranges from subtropical to alpine, featuring oak, fir, rhododendron, juniper, and other plant species.
  • The main ethnic groups in the region are Tibeto-Burman (Rai, Limbu, Tamang) and Hindu Brahmin, Chettri, with Sherpas dominating the mountain areas.

Overview

The Kanchenjunga region contains some of the world's mightiest and most dramatic peaks. The area's namesake, Mount Kanchenjunga, reaches a staggering 8,586m, making it the third highest mountain globally. In addition to Kanchenjunga itself, there are an abundance of other inspiring Himalayan giants encompassed within the conservation area's borders.

Kanchenjunga's four subsidiary summits exceeding 8,000m showcase the diversity of terrain. Yalung Kang, nicknamed Kanchenjunga West, is a particularly celebrated 8,505m sub-peak. Altogether, over 16 peaks rise higher than 7,000m in the region, granting unparalleled high-altitude trekking access.

Trekkers in the remote region are richly rewarded with vantage points of Kanchenjunga's north and south base camps. The diverse peaks, people, flora and fauna unveil the area's pristine and captivating beauty. From the precipitous snow-wrapped spires down to the lush lower river valleys, the topographical diversity is unparalleled and makes the Kanchenjunga Circuit an essential Himalayan trekking destination.
